Travel GHR plans expedition and luxury cruise travel, from small-ship expedition voyages to the Galápagos, Antarctica, and the Arctic to luxury ocean and river cruises. Nicci Grotefendt, a travel agent and the founder, has sailed the Galápagos first-hand and matches the ship, itinerary, and season to each traveler herself.

Last year I sailed the Galápagos, and the moment I keep returning to is not a beach or a sunset. It is the naturalists standing near the flamingos. They had not seen flamingos return to that spot in more than thirteen years, and when the birds flew back in, the guides broke down, because they had been afraid they never would. That is what expedition cruise travel is really about. You are not there to be waited on beside a pool. You are there with the people who know the place, watching something fragile hold on.

    What is expedition cruise travel?

Expedition cruise travel is small-ship voyaging to remote and protected places, the Galápagos, Antarctica, the Arctic, the Amazon, the Scottish isles, where the day is built around wildlife, landings, and the science of the place rather than shopping and large ports. The ships are small on purpose. Instead of a stage show and a casino, you get naturalist guides, zodiac landings, and real time on the water and the shore. Luxury cruise travel sits alongside it and sometimes overlaps it, the space, the service, and the cuisine of a refined ship, on ocean itineraries or on the rivers of Europe and beyond.

How is an expedition cruise different from a regular cruise?

A regular cruise moves a large number of people between ports for dining, shopping, and entertainment. An expedition cruise moves a small number of people into a place to understand it. In the Galápagos, every visitor goes ashore with a naturalist guide licensed by the Galápagos National Park Service, and the whole archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a national park with rules built to protect it. In Antarctica, operators that belong to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators follow shared guidelines on how close you may come to wildlife and where ships may land. The rules are the point. They are why the wildlife is still there.

What most people miss about booking an expedition or luxury cruise

Most travelers compare ships by deck plans and cabin photos. The thing that actually decides your trip is the match between the ship, the route, the season, and you. A small expedition ship in the Galápagos reaches different islands and carries different naturalists than a larger one. A polar voyage in November is a different animal than the same route in February. Travel GHR is a CLIA member agency and I am a member of the Travel Leaders Network, and I have completed the cruise and expedition training the lines themselves run, including the National Geographic and Lindblad Expedition Specialist program, Viking ocean certification, the Seabourn advisor program, and expedition courses through HX. That training is not the point. The point is that it lets me tell you the truth about which ship fits and which one does not, instead of selling you the one in front of me.

What was the Galápagos actually like?

I went out with the scientists and naturalists who are attached to every island, because humans had harmed these places and they had spent years bringing them back. I learned that the giant tortoise, the most iconic animal there, is not originally from the Galápagos at all. It floated in. I watched lizards swim. And I got my hands dirty. We helped plant native Galápagos trees, which is the biggest part of the revitalization, and being part of the solution instead of the problem is the part I carry with me. When I plan a voyage for you, that is the lens, not only where the ship goes, but what your being there does for the place and the people in it.

How I plan an expedition or luxury cruise

I work as one advisor from the first conversation to the final departure. We start with what you want to see and feel, the wildlife, the regions, the season, and the level of comfort, and then I match the ship, the itinerary, and the timing to that. I handle the cruise line, the flights, the nights before and after, and the small details that carry a trip, the visa reminder, the packing list, the confirmations kept in one place. You get a person who has sailed the Galápagos first-hand, not a call center.

If you are thinking about an expedition or luxury cruise, whether it is the Galápagos, the poles, or a river through Europe, I would love to help you design that journey.

    Frequently asked questions

Expedition cruise travel is small-ship voyaging to remote and protected places such as the Galápagos, Antarctica, and the Arctic, where the day is built around wildlife, naturalist-led landings, and the science of the place rather than large ports and shopping.

An expedition cruise uses small ships, naturalist guides, and zodiac landings focused on wildlife and conservation. A luxury cruise centers on space, service, and cuisine on a refined ship. Some ships combine both, and a travel agent matches the style to the traveler.

Yes. Nicci sailed the Galápagos first-hand, went out with the licensed naturalists, and took part in the national park revegetation work, planting native Galápagos trees as part of the islands restoration.

Start with the wildlife, regions, season, and level of comfort you want, then match the ship and itinerary to that. The first step is a conversation so the voyage is built around you rather than around whichever ship is easiest to sell.
